Your Wedding Planning Blueprint

January 21, 2022

You’re engaged! That’s awesome!

Now it’s time to start planning the Big Day!

Your wedding is one of the biggest days in your life and skimping on what you’ve always wanted isn’t an option.

But the dream wedding often comes with a hefty price tag.

The average U.S. wedding costs $38,700, excluding the engagement ring and honeymoon (Business Insider) and the average length of engagement for Americans is 13.6 months (TheKnot.com).

Shockingly, very few couples sit down and plan in advance for this life-changing event.

Instead, they rely heavily on contributions from friends and family (not guaranteed money!) or use their credit cards (with high interest rates!) to purchase everything for the wedding.

Despite the best financial planning, a wedding will cost more than anticipated, so start preparing early with these helpful tips.

  • “Over-budget.” Plan on paying the top cost for each expense and then add an additional 10% to that. Any left over money can be put towards extras or set aside in savings for a house. It’s better to come out ahead then in the red.
  • Prioritize. Being organized can help save money. Since the reception is often a major expense, prioritizing the guest list and food choices early is important. Doing this will help keep excessive spending in check.
  • Start saving early. Consider opening a special savings account specifically for the big day. Unforeseen expenses will happen and you want to be ready.
  • Look to a credit union for help. Credit unions offer many avenues to help people afford big expenses. Most offer personal and special purpose loans, with low-interest options.
